Whisper by Heather Hildenbrand
The Cherokee believe when a person dies, their soul is reborn. Life is repeated. An endless cycle of lessons to be learned, love to be found, destiny to be fulfilled. For the past six months, in every flower, every bird, I’ve imagined my parents, relieved of their human forms.
Now, after five months at the Skye View Wellness Center, it was summer. A time for parties and friends, but that’s the last thing I want to do. So when my best friend Erin convinces me to attend a bonfire at Eagle Point, I can’t handle the crowd full of sympathetic stares or drunken class clowns who would use my tragedy as a way into my heart – or my pants. The solitude of the woods offers an escape, until I stumble upon a boy, unconscious and bleeding, his pockets stuffed not with identification but with poetry illustrating the beauty of dying. I’ve seen enough death. I will not leave this boy’s side.
Even after he wakes, when the only thing he can remember are visions of events that haven’t happened yet…

My Review ❈❈❈❈❈
Oh Wow..I really loved this story! It was so beautiful & unique! I loved all the Cherokee traditions & rituals that were incorporated into it. Whisper is such a loving, caring soul. She suffered through a terrible tragedy but somehow finds a way to survive & help others. And Dylan, Oh Dylan.. he's just perfect. So much mystery surrounding his life, yet he's still strong & compassionate. And even though Dylan & Whisper both have experienced so much sadness, this story is one of hope that will leave your heart full & warm. This is definitely a book I will read again! |
Doesn't it just sound wonderful? Well, it is!! Especially Dylan... he is sooooo strong & dreamy... AND HERE!! I CAN'T BELIEVE HE IS HERE FOR AN INTERVIEW!!! Ok, I'm calm. I'm good. I am gonna try to keep it together long enough to ask him a few questions so here we go! *sigh*
So,
Dylan. Glad you could join us today. Everyone is dying for a little more detail
from you. Tell us about yourself.
What do you want to know?
Well, for
starters, you’re not from here,as in, this frame of time—wait, what year ARE
you from?
I was born in 1833. The year after my parents settled
in the valley after crossing what your people call the Trail of Tears.
And you grew
up with whisper?
We were childhood friends.
Did you
always love her?
Every single second from the time I was eleven years
old.
Ohh, it
sounds like there was a “moment!” Tell us about it!
She was eleven, and already fascinated with animals. My
mother’s cat had just given birth to a litter of kittens so I brought one to
her after school one day.
And?
Immediate love, right?!
*chuckles* For the cat, maybe. She didn’t even see me,
she was so wrapped up in that thing. It didn’t help the stupid thing was a
klutz. Every time it tripped over its own paws she would rush to help it. She
took to carrying it everywhere so it wouldn’t hurt itself. Ridiculous.
I tried again when I was fifteen. Copied down an old
Cherokee love poem I’d found in some of my grandmother’s old letters. Slipped
it into Whisper’s school book before class the day we graduated.
Wait- you
graduated at fifteen?
Yeah, special privileges for the elder’s kids. Most
kids had to stop school at eleven and work with their families. Anyway—she
found it and read it and her eyes got real big, like huge, and she looked
around. The expression on her face when she found me watching and realized …
*whispers, staring off into the distance* I’ll never forget that day.
I started reading more poetry after that.
*stupid grin*
*Thinks: he’s so hot!* Ahem. Do you know what the poem said? Can you recite it
for us?
Oh… um… All right.
Ni-hi
A-ga-li-ha A-da-nv U-li-hi-li-s-di U-gi-tsi-s-gv
Di-tsi-ga-to-li Ka-nu-yo-la-di –a
Mmm,
beautiful …*blinks, remembers where she is* Can you translate?
Sure. Something like … You are the sunshine of my
heart. The joy of my dawn. My eyes become mist at the thought of your love.
*sigh* Like I
said, gorgeous. Oh, uh, words. Gorgeous words. Right, so—anything else you want
to tell us about yourself?
Well, one thing that has been on my mind for a few
years now. I’ve been a little preoccupied, what with keeping Taregan away from
Whisper, but I’d really love to know where you can buy a really good tomahawk
anymore.
A tomahawk??
Uh, I’m pretty sure peeps stopped using those when um, axes, were invented. And
also manners. What do you need a tomahawk for?
Taregan’s out there, along with all of the other
dangers your society has to offer, so you never know. And I will not let
anything happen to Whisper. EVER. I
protect what’s mine.
Right, got
that. But I really can’t help you with a tomahawk, sorry. Thanks again for
stopping by, Dylan. We love any chance to get to know you better. Feel free to
stop by again anytime!
